Gauntlet and Rings

Asthetic:

Aesthetically speaking they're obviously pretty (or gaudy depending on how you feel about an all gold arm piece), but also I can't not think that his whole look is to hide himself and make himself look more dangerous/compensate any of his perceived shortcomings (especially those he experienced in the hells).

His rings mimic claws like Raphael and other devilkin he may have dealt with in the hells. A basic weapon available to most deziens of the hells

Aids:

I imagin that the gauntlet, plus the rings on his other hand, hide and correct crooked fingers while also possibly help with pain. Acting like wrist and finger bracers.

As far as finger braces go even if he wasn't injured reparative writing and working with them (building machines etc) can lead to pain.

But personally I feel like the repeated breaking of fingers is something Raphael and/or Nubalidn may have done to punish him. This could have left lasting pain and possible disfigurement.

Disguise:

A disfigurement he wouldn't want the upper class to see or bother him about constantly. Again even if it wasn't from injury the hands of a builder or fighter (arms dealer/crime lord) will have changes that someone from a softer occupation or a life of leisure won't have. Duke Ravengard as a swordsman probably has hands that show past injury/work, but he's known for and revered for it. While Enver is trying to distance himself from anyone looking into his dodgy past.

Coat Collar:

Again the coat has been discussed by lots of others in great detail and I love every analysis! However, I do want to talk about his collar specifically.

It's meant to be intimidating, but it also covers all of his neck and a good portion of his head. A very vulnerable location both physically and mentally. It screams I am hiding/anxious to me. He can't wear an all out hood without looking (even more) shady, but the high collar probably still acts as some kind of security. I don't think anyone else in game has a hood like this? There's the odd ruffled collar, but nothing like this outside of armour.

Also! Even though most coats are meant to (in fashion) elongate the figure) I feel that his collar makes him appear shorter. Does it darken his figure and make him stand out? Yes, but I feel like it falls short on making him look larger and more intimidating then it could if it cut off at the neck like a normal collar or continued into a full hood.

IF his coat was gifted to him by Bane (see man who prays to a god of tyranny and fear but his coat prevents him from experiencing the fear spell) I think it actually visually demonstrates how he isn't in charge at all.

Visually it makes him shorter and swallows his head a bit. It seems almost like there is a shadow behind him. Is the coat Bane visually oppressing Gortash? I think it's two fold, Gortash will never escape Raphael's shadow and he is within Bane's controll.

Idk this is probably too meta but the ideas wouldn't leave me alone until I screamed them into the void.

I cannot really say where they'll head with Eddie's journey…but I can't wait to see it (hopefully). From what I gather, I think it'd be best for them to become aware of anything between them that is more than friends, then meet in that middle. I assume it'll either be us seeing one pining after the other or perhaps both of them doing the pining and avoiding making the first move.

Right now, I'll enjoy the roller coaster ride. At least the Buck and Tommy of it all, because Eddie and Marisol really felt like a blatant, "here swallow this pill of heteronormativity, choke it down, you'll have to get through this" kind of message.

hi anon! thank you for the compliment, I really appreciate it! I don't consider description to be a particular strength of mine so I'm very flattered that people have found something to enjoy in my work, more than anything :D

I'll do my best to answer your question!

How I approach descriptions! - under the cut!

I tend to only go into extreme detail for essential things. Often, unless a setting is important, a few details (the colour, the vibes, the size) are all that are needed for then the reader's imagination to fill in the rest. This makes an allowance for you to go ham on what is important, and in turn also signals to the reader what should be important to them. If you say the room is white but then spend a paragraph describing the person in it, they know the person is what is important, not the room. Think of description as a way of signposting and determining focus.

Describing around something, or using description to avoid focusing on the action, can sometimes perform the inverse of this - why is the character focusing so intently on this meaningless detail, rather than the matter at hand? Are they, mayhaps, avoiding something in the room? This tip bought to you by Rosalie, the 2nd most unreliable narrator after Astarion.

You want a mixture of short sentences and complex sentences, so that the description doesn't interrupt the pacing of the wider scene. Sometimes, you just need to state something simple, e.g. 'the room was blue' and then that avoids a paragraph describing the room as blue that interrupts the action. Pieces is a weird fic for this bc there are whole chapters that are just exploration, so I had to be descriptive to generate pace, when often all it does is undercut it. But in scenes where shit is actually happening, I can just say "they were in an office" and that's basically all that's the description that is needed. What's more important is they're about to fuck in that office.

Be careful of too many overextended metaphors or similes. Everyone has their bandwidth and patience for purple prose. In my experience, less is more. I'm honestly sure my writing is purple prose, for some people, and this is me being restrained. So basically, save your metaphors for when they really matter. Use one per thing you're describing, at most (less, when also using the rule above).

Alternatively, you can make a simile into an understated metaphor without using many words. Instead of 'the ceiling looked like ribs', 'Rosalie walked down a corridor feeling like she was being swallowed into the belly of a dragon' I can just say 'the ribs of the ceiling' and 'they were led into the bowels of the mansion". Single words can create an image, without being florid or labouring the point.

Descriptions tend to circulate around the visual - a colour, a pattern, a facial expression, the beauty of a space, the visible contents of a room, etc. (we all love knowing what pretty clothes our blorbo is wearing). but descriptions that focus on sensation are also my go-to. Yeah, use all the five senses for variety, etc., but stating how the space/person/item makes the person feel tailors the experience of the setting to that character, specifically, and makes the reader more immersed in their perspective.

Use things you yourself have experienced. This tip bought to you by: Rosalie getting knocked unconscious by Wish, after her author had just been under general anaesthetic for the first time! Rosalie getting panic attacks, after her author experienced somatic symptoms of anxiety! Rosalie going to live by the sea, after her author went on holiday to the Scottish Coast! I am one of those neurodivergent people who catalogues a feeling as I'm feeling it - you don't have to be like that. But if you use stuff you or someone close to you has personal experience of, it feels realer - what do you experience, when you feel fear? What's a landscape or setting you remember vividly? etc.

If it lies outside your experience or expertise... read. Read extensively, and in the genres you like or want to emulate. I read a lot, I highlight and annotate books I read, underlining descriptions I enjoyed, ESPECIALLY on kindle so I can find them later. It will teach you fun and unusual descriptions... it will also teach you the established shorthands. If you've never had a panic attack, how are panic attacks signalled in fiction? Using a trope is so totally valid, and often helpful for getting the reader on the same page as you. It's ok if you're using a cliché, if the cliché serves you.

Finally... be a little silly with it! Take risks! Use weird descriptors. Use odd metaphors. Use your description to make jokes, so it's not just a boring stage direction! Description can feel dull sometimes, bc people don't use it to do anything except set the scene. If your description is doing other things - being funny, telling the reader something about the pov character's voice or how their mind works, creating an odd image that sticks in the person's brain - this makes it more enjoyable to read. In these cases, not only is it just providing cues for the reader to understand where the character is or what they're doing, it contributes to the overall experience of the story!

What kind of a stupid fool makes a deal with a mafia boss? She could have just let her business fall flat on its face and she wouldn't be in this situation.

The deal had been that Levi Ackerman, the one man who singlehandedly ran the city from the shadows, would give her a sizable loan to save her business and keep her afloat. It was such a stupid deal to make, but Evelyn was desperate to find a way not to crawl back to her parents as a failure.

In her defense, she didn't know he was a mafia boss, just a generous investor who took pity on her and chose to help her out. So once she had made the deal only then did he reveal his true self and she realized how deep in shit she really was.

Evelyn shook her head to clear her thoughts, no need to get upset, payday was coming and her business did end up making enough to pay him back. Within the week she'd be done with him.

The thought helped her swallow the ramen noodles she'd had to eat for the last week to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Payday arrived, and with it came the man who haunted her dreams at night for what he'd do to her if she couldn't pay it back. Images of being killed and then dissected to sell her organs constantly filled her mind and made her work harder.

But that was all over today. Today she'd be free of him and hopefully never see his face again. And besides, while scary looking, he wasn't a bad guy to her at least. Even though that meant she still couldn't show fear to him.

"Mr. Ackerman, you look well." She ventures with a friendly smile.

"Levi." He spits out, seeming bored as he looks around. "So I see you made use of my money."

"Yes sir I have," Pride shone through her voice now. "I've worked and saved and scraped together all that I owe you." She slides an envelope towards him.

Without much more than a sideways glance at her Levi takes the envelope and silently counts before looking at her with annoyance.

"This isn't the full amount."

"What do you mean?" Panic rises in her. "I counted it this morning-"

"This covers the loan for the business but not your other expenses."

Evelyn's stomach dropped, looking into the faces of his smug bodyguards, clearly this wasn't the first time they witnessed their boss crushing the hope out of a person. "What expenses-?"

Levi snaps his fingers and is given what seems to be a receipt. "Business loan, paid. Interest, paid. Disposal of persons count one, unpaid. Disposal of persons count two, unpaid."

She shakes her head in disbelief. "Wait, disposal of persons?"

"You know, like a hit?"

Her mouth hangs open. "You killed someone? I didn't ask you to kill anyone."

"Of course you did, I have clear record of one of my guys overhearing you reference to two customers that you hoped they fell in a ditch and died."

Evelyn can hardly believe her ears, the two in question was an old highschool bully named Petra who used to torment her, and the other was one of her lackeys who did as she said. The event was the two had come in to harass her and her business since apparently some people don't grow up after graduating.

"It was just a figure of speech- I didn't want them dead-"

"Then you should have clarified, it's not my fault you're unable to explain yourself."

While the idea of Petra being dead didn't exactly upset Evelyn, the idea of causing it was a little unsettling. "Okay fine, how much do I owe you then."

Levi says nothing but writes out a for her to sign, the amount making her eyes widen.

"I could never pay this back-"

"Then it seems we have a problem don't we."

"Look if you just gave me more time-"

"I've given you plenty of time." He nods and before she can react a cloth is placed over her nose and mouth.

Panic sets in and she can't stop her sharp breaths, each one making black edges come into her vision as Levi's leering face fills her unconscious.

The door opens and in walks the man of the hour, shred of his thick wool coat from before and just in a vest and suit. In his hand was a whiskey tumblr and a cigarette laced through his fingers.

"Good morning, although it is more like good evening."

"Look, Levi, please, I'll do whatever you want to pay it off, but please just don't hurt me- I'll work until I'm a hundred years old-"

"The amount of pain you receive is entirely up to you."

"What do you mean?"

"Well." He sets down the glass and puts out the cigarette before facing her. "If you're good, and do as I say and don't act like a bitch then I guarantee you'll have a great and long life. The best money can buy." As he stalked towards her his hand reached up to loosen his tie.

"And if I don't?"

"If you don't-" He climbs on the bed over her, a sadistic and twisted look in his eye.

What really happened, MT? How do we continue to support Caryl when Norman benefited from Melissa's misfortune? I know you said he didn't have that much power, but he's a producer on the show named after his character. He said that TPTB allowed him to do what he wanted and it looks like what he wanted was for Daryl to lose his lovable personality, for the ship baiting to continue and for his costar to get jettisoned so he could be the star of his own show. How do we reconcile that with support for Caryl?

I love Melissa and I want her to be able to work and I also understand that it was probably this show or retirement. I know that Carol loves Daryl and you can't separate the two, but it's just hard to stomach that Norman will benefit again from Melissa's presence on the show. I don't want to feel dirty supporting a guy who would have anything to do with getting a talented actress and by all accounts a wonderful human being fired to feed his ego. If you know what really happened, please help me and anybody else who's confused and conflicted understand the circumstances.

I can’t share everything I know, but the bottom line is both Angela and Melissa were pushed out. Neither a showrunner nor a lead can just decide they don’t want to do a project they’re already signed on for without becoming unhireable. Both of them have jobs after the fact, so that in itself should tell us something.

As for who did the pushing, there are a lot of angles to it, but there’s a reason I call out Gimple at every opportunity and not Norman. This idea that Norman actively and maliciously tried to get Melissa fired is a projection. It’s false. You say that Norman benefitted from Melissa’s absence. Okay, but the question that matters is what’s the payoff? As far as I can tell, the viewership for S1 shrivels up every time something new is revealed and on top of that, the behavior all of us witnessed this past year didn’t seem to be coming from someone getting everything they wanted. To clarify, aside from Angela and Melissa, I’m not happy with anyone who was involved in the whole ordeal whether they were vindictive or misguided. I don’t like Norman’s interviews. I don’t like the attitude towards fans, journalists, etc, and I really don’t like Daryl being used for other goals.

Why do I still support Caryl then? They can’t be separated without retconning the characters like you said, but more importantly, holding Melissa in high regard means trusting her judgment. The idea that it was “this show or retirement” is also a projection. Would there be extra challenges to getting cast in other roles? Yes, and I’ll get into that more another day, but nothing and no one is forcing Melissa to come back. She doesn’t have to swallow her pride to do this show. She doesn’t have to surround herself with more toxicity. She’s choosing to work closely with Norman again. She’s choosing Caryl. With her on the show, I have more hope than ever that we could get a really good arc for Caryl, including canon.

here's a long and non exhaustive list of things i want to see in a totk dlc (big spoilers btw)

i want to learn more about the zonai. people in hyrule spend the entire game trying to learn more about them and in the end when purah sees the temple of time and says "just when i thought i started to figure out the zonai!" there's still sooooooooooo much we don't know about them that i wish we could learn somehow.

ganondorf and the gerudo. in the story we learn that he is the king of the gerudo, he's evil, he wants power and loves darkness. that's all. i want to learn more about who he is in this story, his motives, his relationship with the gerudo, etc. are ALL the gerudo of that time with him? are they all evil? do they leave him once he becomes the demon king? when he gets the secret stone we don't see the gerudo warriors anymore, what happened with them?

KASS. WHERE IS HIM???????????? IS HE OKAY? ARE WE GONNA SEE HIM AGAIN? MY BOY MY DARLING PLEASE COME BACK. i truly can't believe nintendo would leave out such a beloved character without an explanation. even his family is still there. i would've preferred him having a minor role than completely disappearing :(

the connection between ganondorf and calamity ganon. are they related at all? [tangent warning] my guess is that ganondorf/demon king happened first, from there god knows when ganondorf's evil leaked in the form of malice (in botw it's said that he came from the depths of hyrule castle so that checks out) then creating calamity ganon (the one 10000 years prior to botw), which is evil in its purest form, from there he gets sealed away and 10000 years later he comes back and the great calamity happens which destroys hyrule castle and that's what weakens rauru's power therefore gloom spreading more and more and making people sick, and then totk happens. [tangent end]

who's the ancient hero??? okay hear me out here's another tangent: the ancient hero set is a reward after a huge task, so it definitely cannot be only a fan service, right? it is the look of the hero that defeated calamity ganon 10000 years ago. he's obviously not a hylian, at first i thought he might've been a zonai but he doesn't quite look like one? granted, the only zonai we've seen are rauru and mineru, maybe the others looked different, BUT if he's a zonai then calamity ganon must've happened BEFORE ganondorf??? bc by the time ganondorf appears the zonai are pretty much extinct so my theory above would be wrong. BUT if he's not a zonai THEN WHAT IS HE WHO IS HE I WANT TO KNOW! ofc 10000 years is an insane amount of years, that's longer than the entire documented history of humanity, so maybe he's a completely different race that disappeared long ago and hasn't been mentioned yet. if that's the case i wanna know about that too.

naydra, farosh and dinraal. i actually don't think this one's gonna happen lol, but i'd love to know more about them. we know that they represent the triforce and in totk we learn about dragonification. i've seen theories of them being zonai sages who swallowed their secret stones long ago. it would be so much fun to learn if that's the case and why they did that.

what happened to the sheikah technology that was so prevalent in botw? it would make sense that all the guardians in botw just died after ganon is gone. their parts were used for the skyview towers and i saw someone making the argument that they do explode when they die, so that would explain how they were completely erased from the world, although it still baffles me how despite most of the world is still in ruins, there's absolutely no trace of the decayed guardians ANYWHERE not even in the most remote parts of the world. what happened with the towers? they raised from the ground, we see the one in the gerudo canyon came all the way from a chasm which we can now explore. i wish we had more of an explanation of what happened to them.. and as for the divine beasts, it is implied that they've stopped working in the end of botw, but these machines were huge, where are they now? did they bury them again? so many questions that are probably never gonna be answered honestly :/

As someone who loves angst and pain, I listened to the poetry in Beyonces ‘Lemonade’ (the poetry written by award an Shire) and ofc thought about fmo reader bc it’s one of my favorite series going on right now.

“Apathy”

Here lies the mother of my children, both living and dead. Rest in peace, my true love, who I took for granted. Most bomb p*ssy who, because of me, sleep evaded. Her god listening. All of the poems here really recommend checking them out. Could be really great inspiration for more of fmo reader and how her religion could tie into themes of shame, self-blame, misogyny, sex, loyalty, cycles of abuse/silence/peace keeping, etc that was touched on by Shire in their works. Also lmk if I’m simply doing too much 🫶🏾 bc sometimes my own mind just wanders and I could just be very out of touch to how fmo reader is.

Like this is so fmo reader is hurts. The ‘all three of us’ reminds me of when someone sent in the princess di/Charles/camila parallel. That line makes me think about Diana saying “there was three of us in the relationship”. And it’s still like that to this day even with Diana passing. Their lives, legacies, and worlds will forever be linked and that’s so tragic (for Diana idc about the other two they are going to hell lmao and deserve to be constantly reminded of what they’ve done)

You know, I've been thinking about the rather fascinating fact that whenever Lestat is in Actual Trouble, his first instinct (however reluctantly) seems to be calling (or, as the case may be, crawling) to Armand.

Because from someone like Lestat, that's basically a statement in and of itself even if it's unconscious, to essentially bare his throat to someone who often frankly scares him and has powers he can't match or counter when he's already at his most vulnerable.

And I wonder if Armand ever realized those implications. I mean, I don't blame him if he didn't, for all his wisdom and cunning he's allowed some emotional blind spots. And of course, everyone wants their love returned explicitly, not just implicitly.

Thoughts?

I had to sit and think about this one for a couple days.

I wouldn't say Armand is typically Lestat's first choice, but he is always one of the top three, for better or worse. IWTV/TVL events, MtD, PL-trilogy mayhem, etc.

What I find so interesting about this is how Lestat maintains this pattern of reaching out to him, and when Shit Is Going Down, Armand is one of the first people on Lestat's mind. It's Gabrielle, Louis, and Armand. All this, in spite of their tumultuous, sometimes violent, history.

I, for one, need to know how we got from Armand calling Lestat "ratcatcher" and weeping outside his house while Lestat succumbs to his long sleep, thinking he wanted to tell Armand that he loved him but he couldn't in TVL, to them embracing in QotD and living together with the others on Night Island, to Lestat calling Armand for help during the events of TotBT and MtD. I just... woof.

And it's funny too that Armand and Lestat have an interaction in MtD, in which Armand tells him:

You do hold old grudges. You think I live in the past. You don't understand that I actually change with every era, I always have as best I can.

This is true on both accounts, and it's something Lestat acknowledges in PL:

But let me add here that Armand isn’t the moral cipher I once thought he was. So much of what I thought about us, our minds, our souls, our moral evolution or devolution, was just wrong in the books I wrote. Armand’s not without compassion, not without a heart.

Armand has many emotional blind spots! Regardless of his wisdom and experiences, he will never have the brain of an adult. Yet, I do think he understands the implications here quite well, much more so than Lestat. For me, this is where Armand's frustration comes into play because it's like, "Why do you still insist on maintaining an emotional distance between us after everything?" and we don't see this resolved until the very end of BC.

But ultimately, when Lestat needs someone the most, Armand is one who comes to mind no matter what's going on between them. Lestat can swallow his pride (enough of it) to open up to Armand when push comes to shove.

And I love that.
